WHAT IS K2?
K2 is an herbal mixture laced with synthetic cannabinoids such as JWH-018. These products are sold on the internet, head shops, smoking parlors and even some Beach Resorts. As incense or herbal smoking blends, they can be sold legally. Synthetic cannabinoids are currently not federally controlled in the United States, but the Drug Enforcement Administration labeled them a “drug and chemical of concern” in 2009. While remaining legal under federal law, several states have passed or proposed legislative action against these products while other states are currently working to do the same to protect the safety and health of people.
On October 4, 2010 Baltimore County legislators passed a unanimous ban on the sale, possession and distribution of the synthetic marijuana-like substance sold as “Spice” or “K2.” Violators of the new law, which takes effect 45 days after the resolution was adopted, could face a misdemeanor charge along with a $500 fine and 60 days in jail. Ocean City, Md., already has a similar ban in place, along with 13 other jurisdictions in the United States.
